Kazakhstan: Criminal Trial of Labor Lawyer

The prosecution of a labor union lawyer in western Kazakhstan on criminal charges of “inciting social discord” is incompatible with international human rights law.

August 9, 2011 Update:

On August 8, 2011, the Aktau City Court sentenced union lawyer Natalia Sokolova to six years in prison and barred her from practicing law for three years. She was found guilty on charges of inciting social discord and organizing illegal meetings. Sokolova plans to appeal the verdict.
